Tree Health & Soil Diagnostics — questions

How is this different from a standard arborist report?

A standard report describes condition. Diagnostics explains cause. The distinction matters because a wrong diagnosis means money spent on treatments that were never going to work — fertilising a tree whose actual problem is compacted soil and a buried root collar, for instance.

Can a declining tree be saved?

It depends on the cause and how far it has progressed. Compaction, drainage and root collar problems are frequently reversible. Advanced root or butt rot generally is not. You will get an honest prognosis, including when the money is better spent on replacement.

Why does soil science matter for trees?

Because most urban tree health problems in Brisbane originate below ground — compaction from construction traffic, altered drainage, fill placed over the root zone, or root severance from trenching. Reading the canopy tells you a tree is stressed. Reading the soil tells you why.
